President's Report: A Message from Perryn Olson

In December, we naturally look back at the past year, think of all the things we’re thankful for, and look toward next year. It has been a great year personally and professionally, with SMPS from starting the year off with Southern Regional Conference in New Orleans to our recent sold out luncheons! Going to the President Leadership Symposium (PLS) as your president-elect is a special experience that I wish everyone could partake because of the education and friendships created. One of the things that I’m most thankful for with SMPS is the educational opportunities it provides.

Many SMPS members have no formal marketing training (including myself) and marketers new to our industry, do not understand the intricacies of the A/E/C industry. SMPS allows everyone that wants to learn to do so with conferences, webinars, publications, guides, and much more. Our chapter also has numerous opportunities for you, and we’re continuing to expand those opportunities in 2016.

    New Education Initiatives:

    • Inviting non-members to our Brown Bag Education Events. This is a free member benefit, and we’ve received many requests for non-members to join. Also, we are mixing up the schedule to accommodate those who can not get away for lunch.
    • Coordinators Club - This is a specific educational series for anyone in the industry less than 3 years. Our first event is January 5th!
    • Additional Education - You may have noticed we recently started adding educational articles into this newsletter. We will be adding 3-5 minute educational segments to luncheons as well. Please contact me or Brandi Johnson if you have an article to share or short topic you’d like to present.
    • CPSM Study Group - We’ve had fellow members earn their CPSM (Certified Professional Services Marketer) designation on their own. We hope to continue to grow our number of CPSMs in 2016 and will be coordinating a study group to encourage and help our members do so.

    Continued Education

    • Marketing Workshop - Our one-day Marketing Workshop will be back in 2016 after a brief hiatus for the Southern Regional Conference in January. This event will help you be a better marketer and business developer to grow your firm. It is also a great way to introduce the value of SMPS to someone unfamiliar with us. Grab an industry friend and join us in March for another great workshop.
    • Southern Regional Conference (SRC) - SRC moves to Austin in 2016 and is slated to be another fun, educational conference. The sessions are on the SRC website (http://www.smps-src.org)!

Thank you to the Board and specifically to our education chair, Brandi Johnson with Thunder Marketing, for continuing to grow our education program.
